TASCHEN’s Favourite Hotels

The first volume in a series on the world’s most memorable hotels

Flip through this book and take a trip through 72 of the world’s most enchanting, welcoming and unforgettable hotels. Some are sleek and minimal, others charmingly plush and traditionally luxurious; whether you prefer a secluded rural retreat or the pulsing centre of the urban experience, you’ll find a room—or suite—to your taste. However, what all these establishments share is personality, atmosphere, sophistication and a great location.

Similarly, though their rooms range from modest to extravagant, all of them represent excellent value, no matter which end of the price scale, from two to five star hotels. The eclectic mix includes the romantic hotel Spielweg in Germany’s Black Forest, where everyone should spend Christmas once in their life; the secret jewel Ksar Char-Bagh in Marrakech; the Al Mamlouka in the middle of Damascus, and the most exquisite Spa hotel in Jordan, the Evason Ma’In Hot Springs. Other highlights are the Shigar Fort Residence, a 400-year-old palace saved and restored by the Aga Khan Foundation in Northern Pakistan; a sensitively restored 1930′s colonial guest house, the Boddhi Tree Del Gusto in Phnom Penh, for less than 40 dollars a night; or the outstanding Corbusier-style beach villas in Kep, Cambodia, called Knai Bang Chatt resort. To get away from it all, there’s Richard Gere’s Bedford Post in upstate New York, or the Golden Rock Estate on the Caribbean island of Nevis, owned by American artist Brice Marden. Finally, nobody who has stayed there will ever forget the stunning Remota, surrounded by the mountains, lakes and glaciers of Chilean Patagonia.

The 9/11 Hotel – Part 5 of 5 http://hotelsth.com/the-911-hotel-part-5-of-5/ http://hotelsth.com/the-911-hotel-part-5-of-5/#comments Fri, 18 May 2012 15:28:06 +0000 admin http://hotelsth.com/the-911-hotel-part-5-of-5/

Please read the full description before watching the video. Thank you. Seven years after 9/11, this powerful documentary brings a fresh angle on the terrorist attack. It reveals the extraordinary stories of the people trapped in the 22-storey Marriott World Trade Center Hotel, which nestled beneath the twin towers. Up until now, these stories of luck, sadness, bravery and heroism have rarely been reported; this impressive programme more than compensates. The Marriot was one of New York’s busiest hotels. At 8.45am on 11 September 2001, the hotel was at full capacity, with more than 1000 people staying in its 825 rooms. While guests were finishing their breakfasts, working out in the gym or relaxing in the luxury pool, the hotel’s tranquil environment was shattered by the roar of jet engines and the horror of falling and burning debris. Initially it wasn’t clear to hotel guests exactly what had happened. Some, unable to see the full extent of the carnage way above the hotel, assumed it was minor incident and that the emergency services would soon have things under control. In fact one American lawyer was so busy, preparing for an impending trial, that he stayed in his room. By the time the second plane hit the South Tower at 9.03am, many hotel guests had managed to escape, but as the fires continued to burn out of control and the towers came crashing down, some guests and staff became trapped. Miraculously, 14 survived. This documentary meets some of the survivors. They

Hotels, Hospitals, and Jails: A Memoir

The publication of Jarhead launched a new career for Anthony Swofford, earning him accolades for its gritty and unexpected portraits of the soldiers who fought in the Gulf War. It spawned a Hollywood movie. It made Swofford famous and wealthy. It also nearly killed him.

Now with the same unremitting intensity he brought to his first memoir, Swofford describes his search for identity, meaning, and a reconciliation with his dying father in the years after he returned from serving as a sniper in the Marines. Adjusting to life after war, he watched his older brother succumb to cancer and his first marriage crumble, leading him to pursue an excessive lifestyle in Manhattan that brought him to the brink of collapse. Consumed by drugs, drinking, expensive cars, and women, Swofford lost almost everything and everyone that mattered to him.

When a son is in trouble he hopes to turn to his greatest source of wisdom and support: his father. But Swofford and his father didn’t exactly have that kind of relationship. The key, he realized, was to confront the man-a philandering, once hard-drinking, now terminally ill Vietnam vet he had struggled hard to understand and even harder to love. The two stubborn, strong-willed war vets embarked on a series of RV trips that quickly became a kind of reckoning in which Swofford took his father to task for a lifetime of infidelities and abuse. For many years Swofford had considered combat the decisive test of a man’s greatness. With the understanding that came from these trips and the fateful encounter that took him to a like-minded woman named Christa, Swofford began to understand that becoming a father himself might be the ultimate measure of his life.

Elegantly weaving his family’s past with his own present-nights of excess and sexual conquest, visits with injured war veterans, and a near-fatal car crash-Swofford casts a courageous, insistent eye on both his father and himself in order to make sense of what his military service meant, and to decide, after nearly ending it, what his life can and should become as a man, a veteran, and a father.

Aghast at the treatment of aliens in a hit science fiction movie, the Solomons attend a science fiction convention to try to set the record straight — and Sally’s first experience of hotels get her hooked on room service.

Hotel: An American History

When George Washington embarked on his presidential tours of 1789?91, the rudimentary inns and taverns of the day suddenly seemed dismally inadequate. But within a decade, Americans had built the first hotels?large and elegant structures that boasted private bedchambers and grand public ballrooms. This book recounts the enthralling history of the hotel in America?a saga in which politicians and prostitutes, tourists and tramps, conventioneers and confidence men, celebrities and salesmen all rub elbows. Hotel explores why the hotel was invented, how its architecture developed, and the many ways it influenced the course of United States history. The volume also presents a beautiful collection of more than 120 illustrations, many in full color, of hotel life in every era.

Hotel explores these topics and more:

·        What it was like to sleep, eat, and socialize at a hotel in the mid-1800s

·        How  hotelkeepers dealt with the illicit activities of adulterers, thieves, and violent guests

·        The stories behind America’s greatest hotels, including the Waldorf-Astoria, the Plaza, the Willard, the Blackstone, and the Fairmont

·        Why Confederate spies plotted to burn down thirteen hotels in New York City during the Civil War

·        How the development of steamboats and locomotives  helped create a nationwide network of hotels

·        How  hotels became architectural models for apartment buildings

·        The pivotal role of hotels in the civil rights movement
